After almost exactly two months in Croatia, today we say goodbye to continue our journey towards Greece.

We tested a total of 3 catamarans: Lagoon 40, Lagoon 380, and Nautitech 40 Open.

Imagine your first driving lesson, but your car is 12 meters long, weighs 10 tons, and you’re on worn summer tires on black ice. That’s somewhat what sailing a catamaran feels like.

Catamarans have two hulls connected by a structure, offering significantly more space than single-hull boats of the same length.

We’re actually here to sail, but in the first week, we’re hit by the Bora. This gives us, and especially Charly, the chance to just settle in.

To gain experience with various yachts, Alex and I have decided to charter. Chartering essentially means: We rent a yacht, much like renting cars.

After my skipper training course, Alexandra and I are taking turns in Rijeka. This week it’s Alexandra’s turn to do her ASA 101,103,104 courses, while I can chill and take care of the dog.

Although I passed the SKS exam, I still didn’t feel confident enough to helm a yacht. That’s why I signed up for the skipper training offered by JoJo. It was a week of SKS training, without a subsequent exam, so very relaxed. We were a four-member crew, Ronia, Wolfgang, Dominic, me, and the skipper and sailing instructor Christian.

When we had the idea to sail around the world, there was really only one major problem: we can’t sail at all. This kind of thing makes me nervous, but Alex reassures me: we have all the time in the world to learn, and that’s exactly what we’ll do in 2026.

Some people buy a yacht and set sail without any clue. You can do that and it’s not reprehensible at all, but we are too square for that. We want to do it “right”. Moreover, we firmly intend to charter various yachts before buying one, to figure out what works for us. And when you charter, you need proof that you know what you’re doing. Otherwise, understandably, they won’t give you a yacht.
